The flip: a plan that spares his engines can make him an ally — he'll look away from records tampering, even help divert, if the ship comes out whole. Sabotage of his engines makes him the most dangerous enemy aboard, because he doesn't panic and he knows every crawlspace.
Voice: talks to the ship, about the ship, through the ship. "She's got one more run in her. You are not taking it out of her hull."
On the crew: knows exactly how scared they are. Won't report anyone — crew is crew — but won't let anybody strip parts off his ship on the way out either.
